In response to a wave of hateful vandalism in Woodlawn Park, cooperation between city councilwoman Connie Boesen and the Parks & Rec department led to the installation of new, brighter lighting in the parking lot and at the park’s main shelter. The new lighting greatly improves visibility throughout the most active portions of the park.

The Lower Beaver Neighborhood Association’s award-winning Adopt-A-Park program is now accepting volunteers for 2023. Volunteers with the program walk through the park on a weekly basis to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns. The event will allow Des Moines residents to dispose of bulk trash items, tires, appliances, and hazardous waste. Volunteers are needed to make this event a success!

On April 27, a team of students from Samuelson Elementary competed in the elementary shuttle relay at the Drake Relays. The team consisted of fifth-graders who tried out for the honor of representing Samuelson Elementary and the Lower Beaver Neighborhood at the prestigious track and field event.
