City council clears the way for Alley Landing development
The Des Moines City Council recently approved a $400,000 loan to Woda Cooper Corporation, clearing the way for a new apartment complex to be constructed on the former Plaza Lanes site. The complex, which will be built on the northern part of the property, will feature 40 units, including affordable options. It will also offer a variety of on-site services to residents.
The project will include a dog park, playground, and veterans memorial. It is targeting renters at or below 60% of the area’s median income. A proposed second phase could include 40 additional units on the property.
The southern portion of the property, adjacent to Douglas Ave., remains available for commercial development. In an interview with KCCI, Ward 1 Councilman Chris Coleman said the new construction could be a catalyst for revitalizing the Douglas Ave. commercial corridor.
Officials expect construction to begin in the coming weeks and be completed in Fall 2025.
The development has been a long time coming. Plaza Lanes, the site’s last occupant, was destroyed by fire in December 2017.
